Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan reaffirmed her government’s commitment to co-hosting AFCON 2027 during a 17 September meeting with CAF president Patrice Motsepe in Dar es Salaam. CAF published its account the following day.
Motsepe conveyed condolences following the death of the president’s husband and discussed tournament preparations. He also met Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba during the visit. Representatives of the Tanzania Football Federation and the local organising committee joined the delegation, bringing the bodies responsible for football administration and tournament delivery into the discussions.
Who was at the table in Dar es Salaam
The meetings brought together several layers of responsibility. Tanzania Football Federation president Wallace Karia and local organising committee chairman Leodgar Tenga joined the CAF delegation. CAF was represented by Motsepe, vice-presidents Kurt Okraku and Faizel Sidat, and acting general secretary Samson Adamu. Discussions at that level give the football authorities a direct route to the government departments whose decisions affect preparations.
The occasion also had a personal purpose. Motsepe offered condolences on behalf of CAF’s member associations following the death of President Hassan’s husband. CAF’s account distinguishes that courtesy call from the tournament briefing and from the earlier discussion with Prime Minister Nchemba. It reports a renewed commitment from the presidency without announcing a new construction contract or a decision assigning a particular match to Tanzania.
What shared hosting asks of Tanzania
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have already worked together on the African Nations Championship. That event gave the neighbours practical experience staging a competition across national boundaries. AFCON adds a different field of competitors and a new schedule. National teams can select players from clubs abroad, and supporters will organise travel around the draw and the cities where their countries play.
Some of the decisions sit within one country. Organisers can plan the route between a training ground and a stadium or decide how spectators enter a venue. Other decisions depend on the order of fixtures across all three hosts. A team crossing a border between matches needs a realistic journey time and a training slot on arrival. Fans following the same route need clear information early enough to arrange travel.
CAF has set the opening match for 19 June and the final for 17 July 2027. Those dates give Tanzania the period it needs to plan for even before individual fixtures are allocated. In its June countdown, CAF said it was consulting the three governments and local committees about major tournament assignments. The September meeting added a presidential commitment to that ongoing process. For Tanzanian supporters, the next practical information is which teams will play where and when tickets for those matches become available.
