What does a university need to look like to stay useful over the next decade? That is the question the Association of African Universities (AAU) wants the continent’s campuses to wrestle with next month.

In a release dated 7 October, the Accra-based Association of African Universities invited institutions and partners to join activities from 9 to 13 November 2026. Africa Universities’ Day itself falls on Thursday, 12 November.

On the agenda

This year’s theme is about anticipating change, transforming education and shaping Africa’s future. Planned sessions cover university leadership and governance, artificial intelligence and digital change, teaching and learning, research and innovation, and the thorny question of whether graduates leave with skills employers actually want.

The guest list is broad: vice-chancellors, rectors and university presidents, but also policymakers, researchers, students, young academics, tech companies, private-sector leaders and development partners.

The week will be built around high-level dialogues, panels, roundtables and regional discussions. It is a programme, not a set of results, so the real test will be what institutions take home afterwards.
